The Version of Me That Only Exists After Midnight

Some versions of us only wake up when the house falls asleep.

There is a version of me that nobody has met.

He does not come out at parties or in meetings. He does not answer the phone. He shows up somewhere after midnight, usually when the last light in the building across the road goes off and the ceiling fan becomes the only sound left in my room.

During the day, I am organised. I reply on time. I say I am fine and mostly mean it. I laugh at the right moments and know when to change the subject. That version of me is useful. He gets things done. People like him well enough.

But the one after midnight is different. He is slower. He notices things. He remembers the exact tone of a sentence someone said to me three years ago. He wonders whether I chose the right path or just the safest one. He wants to call my mother for no reason. He writes long messages and deletes them before they are finished.

For a long time, I thought he was the weaker one. The tired one. The one who overthinks because the day has worn him down. I used to tell myself that whatever I felt at 1 AM did not count, because nothing felt real at that hour.

I do not believe that anymore.

The person I am after midnight is not weaker. He is simply unguarded. During the day, I am always partly performing, even when I do not mean to. I am adjusting to rooms, to people, to expectations. I am being the version of myself that fits. At night there is nobody to fit for. So what remains is closer to the truth.

He is the one who knows what I actually want. He knows which friendships feel thin. He knows which dreams I quietly gave up on and pretended I never had. He is not dramatic. He is just honest in a way the daytime version cannot afford to be.

Sometimes I am afraid of him. He asks questions I cannot answer by morning. He makes me feel things I have to tidy away before breakfast. But I have also started to feel a strange tenderness toward him. He is the part of me that still feels everything fully. The part that has not been sanded down by routine.

I think most of us have someone like this inside. A night self. The one who sits by the window with a cup of tea gone cold and lets the mind wander wherever it wants. The one who misses people openly. The one who is soft without apologising for it.

Maybe the work is not to silence that version. Maybe the work is to let a little of him into the daylight. To carry some of that honesty into conversations. To say one true thing before the sun comes up and makes it easier to pretend.

I have not managed it fully yet. Most mornings, he goes back into hiding the moment the alarm rings. But I am learning to listen to him while he is here.

Because the version of me that only exists after midnight might be the most real one I have.
